It’s official, Waka Waka by Shakira is the official 2010 World Cup Song.
Well I’m a bit confused, I thought K’naan’s Waving the Flag was the song. Waka Waka is co-written and performed by Shakira and I believe that Wake Waka means (This Time for Africa).
And although she is backed by South African band Freshlyground, it is just weird for me that the song for the 2010 World Cup South Africa should be sung by a Colombian Woman. And what’s with the opening line? “You’re a good soldier”…
There is also a Spanish version of Waka Waka ( for the African World Cup)
According to Worldcupblog.org “The only problem is that the catchy part of Waka Waka– the chorus – is borrowed from the popular song “Zangaléwa” by the Cameroonian band originally known as Golden Sounds (who later changed their name to Zangaléwa because the song was so popular). The band was apparently made up of ex-Cameroonian military who were fond of dressing up and acting silly.”
Well I guess there’s nothing we can do about it,and it is a catchy tune, so just like all the other stuff that FIFA promised would be done here, even the song was outsourced!

Well, see no problem about World Cup Anthem being sung by Colombian singer. World Cup doesn’t belong to Africa. It just has the privilege to host the event this year, but the cup belongs to WHOLE world. And Colombia is part of that world.
It was more strange for me seeing Jamaican guy singing anthem of European Championship (in 2008), cause European Championship supposed to be European, while the song was clearly nothing near the European…
But well… see no tragedy even in that…
I must say that Shakira and Waka Waka and of Course Freshly Ground have just become part of the 2010 World Cup. I was tweeting with a whole bunch of South African guys during the opening ceremony and when Shakira came on they actually drooled over twitter. They also said lewd and suggestive things – but they loved her and the song. So I guess the fact that she is Colombian ( and all the stuff that seemed so important before the World Cup) is not really that important any more.
how to make waka waka as the hello tune in airtel
I wish people would stop saying this is the World cup and not the South African cup. South Africa ALONE is footing the bill for this event. We didn’t receive any money from our neighbouring countries or South America for that matter. The official song should have been sung by a South African in one of our languages.
I love it
